Templates allow almost unlimited flexibility in how a report can be generated.  The report is based on another worksheet that serves as a template for the report's layout.  The template can be customized using all the powerful features of Excel (formulas, conditional formatting, page setup, print setup, ...).  The template defines exactly where each field will be placed in the spreadsheet.

The template and report in this example provides an idea of the power of templates.  Reports are no longer restricted to simple tables.  Template reports can be as complex as the designer's expertise with Excel.
